Many people find hump noses undesirable aesthetic-wise, as they can sometimes make the nose appear too large in proportion to the rest of the face. A hump nose can also cause the nose to look unbalanced or asymmetric. Due to this, many people feel insecure and self-conscious about their hump noses. Fortunately, we live in a period where technology is highly advanced, and now there are options for us to change certain features of our faces through surgery and be able to look the way we desire to be. Sketch PS is one of the clinics in South Korea that offers these life-changing procedures that would make your aesthetic dreams come true. Our highly-trained surgeons, Dr. Woo Sung Lee and Dr. Hyun Wook Jung, are here to guide you to know what procedure would suit you the best. You can contact them online and have an online consultation. You do not have to travel to South Korea to talk to these professional surgeons.

Dr. Woo is the surgeon assigned to nose surgeries, and his expertise has changed and improved the quality of life of many people. If you have a hump nose, there are many procedures you can choose from to change your nose shape, and rasping is one of them.

What is Hump Nose Rasping?

Rasping is a different approach in rhinoplasty. It is not your typical surgical procedure that people know of. Hump nose rasping is a procedure that involves reducing the hump of the nose by shaving the excess using a tool called a rasp. It is usually done after a surgical rhinoplasty when there is still a small nasal hump not removed properly. The anatomy and structure of a nasal hump are complex, and your surgeon needs to have high expertise and vast knowledge of the nasal anatomy. Dr. Woo is an expert in nose surgeries and has been performing them for years and has performed to hundreds of customers. You can surely trust Dr. Woo with your nose.

Structure of the nose

How its Done

During the procedure, the surgeon will typically make a small incision in the skin on the nose to gain access to the underlying bone and cartilage. Then the surgeon will insert the rasp in the incision and carefully shave away the excess bone or cartilage causing the hump or bump on the bridge of the nose.

Three types of rasp can be used:

  • Rasp with large ivory – used to smoothen medium-sized humps
  • Needle-shape rasp – used to smoothen larger humps
  • Smooth rasp – used for final smoothing after removing the excess hump

Usually, there is no need to undergo open rhinoplasty and make an external incision to do the procedure. A closed method is usually enough for the surgeon to access the inside of the nose and start rasping. Rasping is also done under general or local anesthesia, so you do not have to worry about feeling any pain.

After the surgeon is done rasping or shaving the excess hump, the nose is cleaned with a sterile solution that will wash off the shaved particles of the bone. When the area is all cleaned up, the incision will be closed, and you are good to go. The procedure takes up less time and is done on outpatients.

Candidates for Nose Rasping

It is important to note that while rasping can be an effective way to improve the appearance of the nose, it is not suitable for all patients. In some cases, more extensive surgical procedures, such as an open or closed rhinoplasty for a hump nose, may be necessary to achieve the desired results for the patient. That is why rasping is usually done after rhinoplasty, and just a few changes are needed. Consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine what procedure is best for your needs. Here are the candidates for nose-rasping:

  • People with minimal nose hump – Rasping is used for minor nasal hump reductions where the excess bone or cartilage is minimal. It cannot do extensive reductions because it does not break and alter the nose shape.
  • People who have fully developed noses – This is usually at 18 years old for girls, but boys may have to wait longer for their noses to fully develop.

Recovery After Rasping

Recovery from hump nose rasping can differ depending on the extent of the procedure and the overall health of the individual. In general, here are some guidelines for your recovery:

Immediately after the procedure, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. You may be prescribed pain medications to manage any pain or discomfort.

  • Avoid touching or bumping your nose during the first few weeks after the procedure to allow the tissues to heal properly.
  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights after the procedure to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity and exercise for at least two weeks after the procedure to avoid putting yourself and your nose in danger and avoid straining it.
  • Avoid smoking or using any nicotine products during the recovery period because this can slow down the healing process.
  • You will likely have follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress and ensure that your nose is healing properly.

Although rasping is not a major procedure, it is important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully and to contact them if you experience any concerning symptoms, such as excessive bleeding, fever, or severe pain.

FAQs

Is Nasal Rasping Painful?

Will Nasal Rasping affect breathing?

Nasal rasping is for patients who have minor humps and do not need intensive changes in their nasal structure. It is also done for those people who already had rhinoplasty but still are unsatisfied with the results. The cost for nasal rasping is almost the same for rhinoplasty ranging from about $3000-$6000. Nasal rasping is done under general anesthesia, so you don’t have to worry about feeling pain during the procedure.
