Double eyelid surgery is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries done among Asians. This is due to monolid being common in people of  Asian descent, which a lot deem to be less attractive. This procedure involves creating a crease on the eyelid through different techniques. Double eyelid surgery is known to make the eyes look brighter, bigger, and thus more aesthetically appealing to the mass. This is the reason why it is very popular, especially for people who want a more youthful and “Westernized” look.

Sketch PS is a medical clinic in South Korea that provides high quality medical services to patients around the world. Dr. Hyun Wook Jung is the surgeon assigned to take care of eye surgeries. He uses his skills and expertise to treat patients with care and make their aesthetic dreams come true.

What is Incisional Double Eyelid Surgery?

Double Eyelid Surgery can be done using two methods: incisional or non-incisional.

The Incisional method is the most common technique people prefer to get. It is the best for people who want permanent results, and a defined crease. Incisional double eyelid surgery is very beneficial to those with droopy eyes and excess fat. The amount of skin, muscle, and fat that will be surgically removed depends on the desired result. Incisional double eyelid surgery can be partial or full. The surgery time for incisional double eyelid surgery can be from 40 minutes to 1 hour.

The procedure goes as follows:
     1. The line for the proposed placement double eyelid will be drawn with a pen.

  1. The area will be anesthetized using local anesthetic.
  2. Incision will be made through the skin.
  3. The skin that was marked will be removed.
  4. The orbicularis oculi muscle as well as the adipose tissue will be removed.
  5. The incision will be closed using skin glue or stitches .

1. Partial Incision

This technique involves making a small incision, less than 5 millimeters in the upper eyelid, then stitching the upper part to the dermal layer.

This is ideal for those who have excess fat in both eyelids and those who want minimal scarring and a fast recovery time. The recovery time for partial-incisional double eyelid surgery differs by person, but overall, it takes about 1-2 weeks for the majority of the swelling and bruising to go away.

2. Full Incision

This method produces the most long-lasting results. It’s similar to the partial-incision technique, however, the incision is longer and runs nearly the whole length of the eyelid. Sutures are put in place to close the incision and imitate the fibrous attachments found in double eyelids normally. Excess skin and fat are removed as needed.

One disadvantage of this technique is that it leaves a permanent scar. Fortunately, the scar is just thin and is generally cosmetically accepted.  Healing also takes longer, and the eyes would be more swollen. The operation takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour, and the stitches will be removed after 4-5 days.

Why Do People Choose To Have This Surgery?

Double eyelids are very popular in Korea, hence people are choosing to get this surgery. It is also helpful for people who have heavy or droopy eyes that hinder their vision, making it hard to see. Double eyelid surgery has several other benefits that make it more popular.

  1. Has a relatively short recovery time.
  2. Fairly inexpensive.
  3. Isn’t too invasive.

All of these while ensuring a fairly dramatic and life-changing transformation. Due to its popularity and the social status that comes with it, it is even sometimes given as a birthday, graduation, or coming-of-age gift to young people by their parents. Some sources even say that having double eyelids may increase the chances of an individual finding a job or getting accepted into acting schools. The rise of K-pop is also a factor in its popularity since many idols are getting the procedure.

Candidates for Incisional Double Eyelid Surgery

People who have monolid and wish to reconstruct them are candidates for double eyelid surgery. Dr. Hyun Wook Jung will carefully assess each patient and the structure of their eyelids to identify what treatment plan is best for their eye shape.  You can set up a free online consultation with him to talk further about your needs.

Incisional Double Eyelid Surgery is recommended for the following:

  • People with excess skin on their eyes
  • People with monolids
  • People with hanging eyelids
  • Healthy people without any serious eye condition

Recovery and Aftercare

You can expect your initial recovery period to last for two weeks. Sutures will also be removed two weeks after the surgery. You might experience the following during your recovery phase

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Small bleeding
  • Dry eyes
  • Light sensitivity

If any of these get worse, or you experience other symptoms causing pain, you need to talk to your doctor immediately. Your doctor can prescribe you medication that will help alleviate the symptoms that you are experiencing.

Double eyelid surgery comes with potential risks and complications that the surgeon must discuss with the patient properly before proceeding with the surgery. The severity of the complications varies between the patient and the surgeon.

Here are some risks that come with Double Eyelid Surgery

  1. Infection – This is relatively rare but can still happen. Bacteria on the skin are the most common causes of infection. The infection can come with swelling and pain, and prescribed antibiotics can help treat it. However, if the pain and swelling persist, the patient should consult the surgeon to know the proper intervention.
  2. Overdone surgery –  In some instances, the surgeon can remove too much skin and fats on the patient, which can cause serious issues.
  3. Bleeding – Mild bleeding after double eyelid surgery is common. Mild pressure will keep the bleeding under control. Bleeding is a result of strenuous activities such as bending, lifting, straining, coughing, sneezing, straining on the toilet, etc… Following the doctor’s orders of aftercare is important to avoid such complications.
  4. Slight asymmetry and unevenness of the eye – It is one of the most common complications. It usually settles over time and does not necessarily need a surgical revision. It’s important to choose a good surgeon and clinic without a high revision rate.
  5. Wound dehiscence – It is the partial or complete separation of wound edges because of inadequate wound healing. It could be only the surface layer or the entire wound. A mild dehiscence can be treated with antibiotics, however, a severe and complete one should be treated and repaired.

FAQs

Will I have scarring after recovery?

Every kind of surgery has a risk of scarring. Fortunately, double eyelid surgery has one of the most minimal scarring. When healed, the scar will blend in with the color of the skin. Most patients cannot even recognize where their scar is after the healing process.

How long do the results last?

The results after incisional double eyelid surgery can last a lifetime compared to the non-incisional counterpart. However, the skin changes as we age, and the result of the surgery can get affected.

Is Incisional Double Eyelid Surgery Cheap?

Incisional double eyelid surgery is not cheap but is less expensive than other cosmetic procedures. The cost may vary depending on the case, location of the clinic, materials used, and others. It is essential to look for a clinic that offers quality services at an affordable price if you are looking for a clinic on a budget.

Conclusion

Incisional is one method of undergoing double eyelid surgery. This method involves making an incision on the eyelids and removing excess skin and fats to achieve the desired results. Double eyelid surgery is popular among Asian descent because it gives the eyes a brighter and more youthful look. It is inexpensive and also has a quicker recovery time.
